last few days
Happy 2002, everyone.
Sunday afternoon: On the Mark practice. Then Sunday night we had dinner with Ralph and Lori. (The rest of the usual crowd was out of town.) In a continuing effort to use up the leftovers from their Christmas dinner, they made a lovely turkey-bean-barbeque dish. We played two games of Chrononauts, both of which I won -- which is very unsuual. The "real" game is much easier to play than the beta version that Dani has, because in the real game the cards are color-coded. We also played a new game that Ralph got for Christmast, called "Democrazy" (I think); it looked like it was done in the Nomic mold, but it was more limited. I think it would be fun with more players, but with four the votes on rule changes were too predictable. We should try it again with a larger crowd.
Monday was miscellaneous cleanup and the like, including a manual backup of my LJ because the download feature doesn't capture comments. (I'm also not excited by either of the two format options, tab-separated fields and XML. HTML isn't perfect because the user pics are broken, but it's mostly ok.) We also went out to procure chocolate offerings to take to parties. And I wrote my "2001 roundup" thingy, which I sent out in email to some friends not on LJ. (If you're one of them and you're reading this, you need to sign up for a free LJ account to see my protected entries.)
Monday night we went to Dave and Alfie's first and then headed out to Don/Karen/Ann's. (We'd never been there before; I'm glad we followed someone. I'm not sure I can reproduce it.) That was fun. Things got silly after midnight; watching Joel and Dani attempt to debate what I think were probably meaningless fine points of statistical theory, while Joel was thoroughly drunk, was entertaining. When they got out the napkins and pens I wandered away, though.
Someone was doing readings from a book called "You Are Worthless" -- seemed to be sort of the merger of "Nourishing Your Inner Martyr", Deteriorata (?), and http://www.despair.com . Amusing stuff.
Today we went to Johan and Arianna's traditional new year's day party, which begins with brunch "to replace all the electrolytes you lost last night". (Aside from one glass of champaigne, I hadn't actually done any drinking.) Johan is a good cook; I'll eat his food any time. :-) Especially as he's careful to stay kashrut-friendly. I hung around and chatted with folks; Dani and others were playing games -- mostly Kings and Things, I think. Later a bunch of us played a quick game of Acquire. When they started talking about a quick game of Robo Rally, I told Dani it was time to go. (I don't believe there's any such thing.)
Tomorrow: back to work.
