I wonder...

I don't claim to understand all of the deeper politics at work here, but: why hasn't Israel sealed the borders to Gaza and the west bank yet? Forget about checkpoints and searching Palestinians on their way through; don't let them through until there's some reason to believe that the bombings will stop. Sure, it's arguably unfair to those who aren't involved in attempts to destroy Israel, but it would probably lower the loss of life and almost certainly lower the loss of innocent life. (Military installations are legitimate targets; discos and pizza shops and markets are not.) And it's not like there's a real good track record for telling the terrorists from the others before they kill people.

Obviously I'm missing something fundamental; what is it?

In a similar vein, since Arafat's prisons seem to lack locks, why hasn't anyone asked that the terrorists he arrests be extradited elsewhere for safe-keeping? I would expect Arafat to say no, but let that reflect on him, rather than Israel or the UN not even bothering to bring it up.

My rabbi is currently on his way to Israel for a conference of some sort. I pray that he returns healthy.
