I had no idea that some of my friends were such sports fans. If I were interested in the World Cup (that's, um, soccer, right?), I could track the details solely through LJ. But I'm not a fan, so I get to sleep at night instead of watching games. :-)

My father has a similar, though diurnal, involvement with football. When I was growing up, weekend activities were sometimes scheduled around games -- which sent an inconsistent message to my sister and me, who wanted to watch certain TV shows and were told "meals take priority; if you miss a show too bad". Even after VCRs had been invented and my parents got one, though, my father has always insisted that it's just not the same to watch a taped game. I would think that avoiding spoilers would be the only real problem. And hey, the VCR could provide additional sources of excitement: "Eek, they've gone into overtime! Did I record for long enough?" :-)

Actually, normally I'm with Seth on the Football part...I had never watched a football game in my life (more than 15 minutes or so) until Maryland was doing so well. I never got caught up in sports and school spirit or anything while I was in school, so it's a bit on an anomaly. But our friend* is a graduate student at Maryland, a closet football fan, and a non-tv owner. So she came over to watch the games and I got caught up in the madness.

The 2002 World Cup is being jointly-sponsored by South Korea and Japan; hence the middle of then night/early morning broadcasts. There is a Spanish channel that broadcasts them a bit later, though.

For the record, I rarely carve time out of my schedule to watch a game of any sport, unless I'm going to see it in person. If a game happens to be on and I happen to be in front of the tv, that's fine, but I don't seek them out. I'm not the ridiculous fanatic that my insomniac journal entries made me seem!!

*actually, you met her at the Purim Seudah...it's Alida, Ian's wife, she left a little early but she was sitting across the table from you and a few spaces down...Ian's the one that brought the chili)

Alida is very quiet. But when she has something to say, it's usually worth listening to. Ian is a bit more outgoing than she.
