I had no idea that some of my friends were such sports fans. If I were interested in the World Cup (that's, um, soccer, right?), I could track the details solely through LJ. But I'm not a fan, so I get to sleep at night instead of watching games. :-)

My father has a similar, though diurnal, involvement with football. When I was growing up, weekend activities were sometimes scheduled around games -- which sent an inconsistent message to my sister and me, who wanted to watch certain TV shows and were told "meals take priority; if you miss a show too bad". Even after VCRs had been invented and my parents got one, though, my father has always insisted that it's just not the same to watch a taped game. I would think that avoiding spoilers would be the only real problem. And hey, the VCR could provide additional sources of excitement: "Eek, they've gone into overtime! Did I record for long enough?" :-)

Honestly, if it weren't for the pain of the dratted kidney stone, I would've been sleeping or working, not watching the games (though I *might* have recorded the US/Poland Game, only to be disappointed by it). I typically keep up with the scores via the internet and that's the extent of it. I'll watch the final, or at least tape it, for sure. But otherwise, I just don't have time anymore.

I was born in Scotland and spent 5 years of my childhood. Futbol/Soccer is sorta hard to escape there. I was handed a Pele (famous soccer player) video and a soccer ball when I was three. Plus, it didn't hurt that my father did a lot of refereeing. I think he refereed some World Cup Qualifying Games while we were in Spain, but I may be wrong on that. It was a really big deal in our family.

Seth, I know, is more than amused that I have such an interest in any sport...he has zero. I remember calling him upset when the Yankees lost the World Series...he was like, "so?" and "I had no idea you even watched baseball...why would you do that?" Oh, the small things you learn about your mate over time... :-D

I think he was even far less amused when University of Maryland went to the Orange Bowl because that meant football had to be on his TV in his house. *shiver* I'm not a football fan, but I sure did enjoy the games that led up to the Bowl game.
