Consider a lane-closing on a highway. You have, say, two lanes of traffic going 60mph that have to merge into one lane. Why is the resulting speed near the merge point not close to 30mph? It's usually around 5mph. "Friction" (that is, wiggle-room from imperfect communication) should slow it down from 30mph, but not that much.

For extended construction projects (like the one I drove through on the way to Pennsic), wouldn't be worth the hassle of installing a traffic signal in order to improve flow? I wonder why they never do this. (They obviously have electricity available to power all the message-board signs.)

Out of my league:

You people and your physics are so out of my league. I was just going to pop in to agree that the construction at Wexford was heinous, ESPECIALLY if you had to get off or on at that exit. I had to drive through it 3 times on Sunday. Once home to drop off all my stuff, and then into Wexford itself to pick up the dogface from "summer camp."

PS - Out of place, but thanks for the post on Laurels. I was wondering about that. Does anyone know if there are any embroidery or lace laurels in the area??? I'm looking to foster out my apprenticeship (with my Laurel's permission, of course) as she's now mostly confined to a wheelchair these days and hasn't been attending very many events...
