cellioSigh. It turns out the other VCR did bite the dust in the power surge, but in a non-obvious way: it has signal, it has all its usual programmability... it has everything except the ability to actually move a tape. So I guess I'll be dubbing Twilight Zone off of the Enterprise tape each week, because I'm anal about keeping my tapes sorted.
On the bright side, I figured out how to dub tapes tonight. And on another bright side, I'm not sure the dubbed tape will be of lower quality than what the old VCR would have produced. (Seeing the end of last season's Enterprise while cuing up the tape for tonight made it really obvious that the old tapes don't look so great on the new TV.)

I recorded Enterprise also last night. I'm not sure how it came out, since I'm using an antenna in NYC (which has become more problematic without the transmitters atop the WTC). I've been following Enterprise... but with farily low expectations. So far it's surpassed them, although it is still nowhere close to ST:TNG in my book...

I've been following Enterprise... but with farily low expectations.
I've found it to be better than Voyager. I'm not enthusiastic about it, but I watch it. And remember that TNG wasn't very good during its first year, either. (Of the Trek shows, I think DS9 has probably done the best in getting up and running quickly.) Any new series is going to need some time to get established, and I think a new series in an established universe faces even more challenges because people come in with expectations.

Date: 2002-09-19 07:49 am (UTC)Arr, good question. The problem, matey, is that when I was a young tar, I recorded on whatever tape was available at the moment. So one tape has episode #55, 31, 62, and 64 (in that order). Thar be need for databases, shiver me timbers!

Date: 2002-09-19 09:07 am (UTC)True. And I do have a flat file (DB not needed for this) listing which (classic) Twilight Zone episodes are where, because I have a hodge-podge of tapes there. (That is, I have dedicated TZ tapes, I guess about a dozen of them, but the episodes are in fairly random order, mostly the order dictated by the SF channel when it ran marathons.)

It's been a while now, but I seem to recall DS9 hitting a bit of a slump mid-run. And, of course, you have to categorically reject all Ferengi-centered episodes; life is too short to sit through drivel. (Actually, there was one good one, though I no longer remember what it was.) Toward the end of the run they got the idea that they could tell a continuing story and they did a good job of that. And I enjoyed the character of Garek, who showed up in the last couple seasons.
Ok, maybe DS9 was more variable than I remembered.
(So, do you have an eye patch, hook, and parrot (or suitable animal substitute) to go with that accent?)

Perhaps it comes from not watching it consistently, but the snatches I saw were not too interesting to me. Although I have to say that part of it is that I don't see how Worf could ever fall for someone other than Dianna (although Imzadi II helped reconcile that to a certain extent), and the "new" dax they introduced at the end was not too compelling for me. But mostly I just wasn't interested.

No, it was "talk like a pirate day", not "dress like a pirate day", thank goodness. (What would they have thought when I bought my lulav and etrog down on the lower east side? :-) I managed to talk like a pirate, at least a little, to most of my friends... although I didn't when speaking with strangers. Or my parents. Perhaps next year. :-)
(Also, thank goodness, I didn't morph into a pirate like that Monty Python skit...)

I was thinking of writing a "pirate-talk" filter, much like the canonical "valley girl" and "swedish chef" ones, but never got beyond the "this would be useful" stage.
