network fun
I didn't know a network cable could be bad but still register ok on a tester. It took a long time for us to solve a networking problem because of that. :-( (This is the cable that runs from Dani's office, through the attic, and down to my new office across the hall. Not exactly an easy one to replace, but fortunately, all it needed was new caps.)
Last night a couple friends came over to move furniture and boxes and stuff. The basement office is now a guest room, complete with an old computer that we use as a file server but that guests can use for SSH or whatever. It's polite to offer internet access to one's guests. I can't get the spare 3-port hub[1] to work, though, so if guests come with laptops they'll have to move cables around (or fix my hub). My office is now on the second floor, in the room that had been the TV room until we moved the TV to the room next door. (That room had been mostly just collecting junk, which we hauled to the attic, basement, or curb, as appropriate.)
There was one minor casualty: one cable from the switch box (I temporarily have two computers in my office) is not communicative. Oh well: I can wait a couple days to fix that.
So now I have boxes all over my office to deal with, and it took until this afternoon to get my machine onto the network, but I'm still much happier with the new space.
[1] It's officially a 4-port hub, but one of the ports doesn't work.
