Friday five

1. Do you like talking on the phone? Why or why not?

Yuck. No. In-person discussion gives you subtle cues you don't get over the phone; written discussion (e.g. email) lets you think about what you say, while real-time conversation does not. Phones are the worst of both worlds, and are best-suited for time-sensitive short exchanges.

2. Who is the last person you talked to on the phone?

The cleaning lady (scheduling).

3. About how many telephones do you have at home?

Four, or five if Dani has one in his office (I can't remember if he does).

4. Have you encountered anyone who has really bad phone manners? What happened?

Aside from telemarketers, who are paid to have bad phone manners, I can't think of any.

5. Would you rather pick up the phone and call someone or write them e-mail or a letter? Why or why not?

Depends on the reason for the communication. In general I much prefer email (see question 1).

I'm finding that it's scarcely worth answering this one, because half the people I know have the same responses I have.

(Although my own phone manners have turned very selective. Normally I'm quite polite, but I've gotten Just Plain Rude to telemarketers. I don't even usually let them get the first sentence out before hanging up on them...)
