silly marketing people
May. 7th, 2003 09:23 pmPittsburgh now has a kosher Krispy Kreme outlet. But it's inconveniently located for me (Century III mall), so I haven't been there. (We have two Krispy Kremes; the other one isn't convenient either. I hear we might get one in Monroeville, which would be nice.)
So anyway, I noticed a sign in Squirrel Hill announcing an opportunity to buy the kosher doughnuts on two particular days locally: Friday during the work day (10-4), and Saturday. While the Friday hours can be explained by assuming they aren't interested in customers who work conventional hours, the rest of the plan suggests that someone is missing an awfully big point. Let's review: they are offering the kosher doughnuts (specifically) for purchase on Saturday.
Wouldn't this work better if they sold them on, say, Sunday? Or some random weeknight, like Tuesday?
Or are they really just going after the Krispy Kreme market, because the current locations are inconvenient to Squirrel Hill, and using the kosher ones was an afterthought?

Date: 2003-05-08 06:55 am (UTC)According to this article (Google to the rescue), there are 13 kosher KKs in the US and four in Canada, and two of their plants are kosher. The Star-K site (that's whose hechsher it is) lists 9 locations that they certify; I don't know if that means their list is incomplete or someone else does the others.
The Krispy Kreme FAQ says that the only animal byproducts they use are eggs and milk and that all of their dooughnuts "are ingredient kosher".
Boston kosher donuts
Date: 2003-05-08 07:10 am (UTC)I'm not happy with Dunkin Donuts as a company, though, since they pushed out an independent donut place in Arlington that had better donuts and was kosher (also open at 5 am, if one wanted donuts then :-). So I haven't gone out of my way to patronize them.
Thanks for all the other info.

Date: 2003-05-08 10:03 am (UTC)Krispy is coming, but very slowly: they've moved into CT, and they're opening one in the Boston area sometime decently soon, IIRC. But it's basically moving into enemy lands, and they're doing it quite carefully. I haven't heard any plans of them opening one that I can actually get to regularly. (Which is probably better for my arteries, to be fair.)
This is why we made a special trip to Krispy Kreme when
