The basement no longer smells bad from the flood. The restoration guys ripped out the carpet in the one room (not salvagable, already growing mold), disinfected everything, and ran dehumidifiers and fans for a day. Big difference.

They are restoration guys only, not contracters in the business of preventing this kind of damage, so since they have little vested interest in such repairs I asked for recommendations. Their answer was that it's probably not worth it to try to do french drains or something; when this happens, there's so much ground water that french drains wouldn't keep it out anyway. And anything in that direction is a really expensive proposition. Their advice was to be mindful of where we keep our stuff, replace that carpet with indoor/outdoor stuff, and buy a dehumidifer and run it any time humidity exceeds about 60%. Sounds good to me.

I got another letter from my Marine friend. The mails have gotten faster; this one was dated May 12. :-) He sent me Iraqi money as a souvenir; the 250-dinar note (with Saddam's face on it) was worth about a dime when he sent it.

Tomorrow night is the NetBill reunion dinner. Should be fun. People are coming here, and I have the crock pot set up to bring forth curried chicken and apples at the correct time.
