My birthday is later this month, and I get to watch the digits turn over. Ooh, nice round number... sounds like an excuse for a party. :-)

The birthday itself is on a weeknight, with the bounding weekends being a large local SCA event (Coronation) and Rosh Hashana (major holiday), so I've given up on any notion of proximity to the actual date. I won't hold the party on Shabbat (among things, I want to be able to serve hot food), which means the longer I wait the more feasible Saturday nights are. (Certainly come the time change all such issues vanish.) I'm not averse to Sunday afternoons, but I get the impression that some of my friends find this suboptimal.

Sure, I could have a party at your house. I'm afraid I won't be able to make it, but I could invite my Boston-based friends to get together anyway. "Party in Pittsburgh; satellite party in Boston; party-hopping permitted if you can pull it off". :-)
