Tour of a pack-rat's house. That woman needs help. It might be cheaper to burn the place down than to clean it up and sell it. Link courtesy of the_never.
I know a couple who are well on the way to this (worst case I've ever personally witnessed), but they have a lot more exposed floor and furniture than this person.
That's not pack-rat. It's mentally ill. I beleive that the DSM-IV has an entry for it. One of the "teach-you-something-to-weakly-justify-television" channels had a show on this a while back.
Yeah, but that means someone has to catalog it all. I don't think "large box, contents unknown, probably contains glass" will fetch a price high enough to be worth the trouble. :-)
Indeed! Though sadly, that might just prompt her to move over to the Shopping Network and yard sales... but still. The guy's a college student; surely he can do something to the computer to outsmart his mother. ("But professor, I just had to write this virus...".)
Some of the stuff seems to be from yard sales... I guess it's just that eBay is easier, the stuff comes shipped to you in convenient boxes, and you can do it every evening (as opposed to some weekends).
Also aside from the arson aspect, I'm not sure that burning down the house would really help: a lot of the stuff seemed to be glass. Sure, it would melt, but I don't think that would keep the packrat mother from trying to keep it after it cooled down.
Actually.... if our house started to get a lot closer to being that bad... Dan would probably stop joking about dragging my stuff out to burn and actually _do_ it.....
Good Ghod! And I've been complaining about my parents! Speaking of which, I got another carload of stuff to sell on E-bay. This week's load contains an air-compressor sans tanks and a bottle sterilizer. As in baby-bottle. Remember, I'm an only child. So they've had this thing for *how* many years? :D
No, it was just buried. When my wife and I first got married, we got a full car load of baby furniture within a week of our wedding. My mother was furious when we gave it away to the folks in the barony who could actually use it.
