hiring tech writers

The company formerly known as MAYA Viz is currently looking for one or two technical writers to work on end-user and system-administrator documentation and training materials. This is interesting, cutting-edge visualization/collaboration software, not some boring "document version N.0 of $decades_old_package" job. There'll be a mix of commercial and military applications. We're in Pittsburgh and not set up for remote work; sorry to my friends in other cities.

I'll be happy to talk with folks and pass on resumes. I might get a finder's fee if we hire you (I'm not sure how that works yet; it's new), and if that happens I'll do something nice for you, but my main motivation is that I want to work with good people.

Too bad about the no-remote-work thing, as I know some folks who might be interested if that were an option. I would be interested myself if relocating to Pittsburgh were a feasible option...

Sorry about that. The work environment is pretty collaborative and interactive; we do have one engineer working remotely, but only after spending a couple years living here. (He had a two-body problem and we wanted to keep him.) He still comes up for one week each month. Even so, it's kind of challenging for everyone.

But hey, if coming to Pittsburgh ends up being an option, let me know! I don't know what your constraints are so I'm not pushing.

Well, Sallie would need to find a job too... and we'd have to first repair, and THEN sell, the existing house. (Though we'd probably make an insane capital gain by selling it... I think the land alone has doubled in value in the last 4 years!)

Honestly, I'd rather work at an office in a "collaborative and interactive" work environment. I do my best when I can bounce ideas off of other people. Which probably explains a great deal of why my past 8 years on the job have sucked as much as they have.

Same here. I like being able to bounce things off of coworkers. I like being pulled into the occasional meeting just because I was walking by a conversation in front of a whiteboard. This can go too far -- typical cube farms are way too noisy and disruptive, for instance -- but I'm not interested in being a professional hermit.

So what kind of job would Sallie be looking for? :-)
