Dani got me something very similar to this for my birthday:

Yes, it looks very much like a phone from early in the last century. It looks at home on my ancient wood desk. It's actually digital -- that's not a dial; those are push-buttons. The center of the dial is a redial button. Spiffy!

I actually have a rotary telephone on my desk. Walt gave it to me as a present when we were dating because our conversations kept getting cut short when my cordless phone ran out of juice. This never happened with the rotary phone, but of course I sacrificed portability. Oh well. :)

I still have a working rotary phone in the house. It's not used often, but if Verizon ever screws up the line such that DTMF (touchtone) stops working *again*, I can plug in the rotary phone and still be able to call out.

Yes, any wired phone would have worked. He gave me the rotary for novelty purposes, sort of, though it feels a bit strange calling an old-fashioned phone a novelty.
