new office
Another in the "what were they thinking?" file: indirect fluorescent lighting reflected off of chartreuse/lime walls. Um, yeah. (John, you've got to see the demo when you get back! It's special.)
There is definitely too much ambient whitish light in our space. A coworker has already offered to help install a bead curtain if I produce one and promise not to implicate him. (To clarify: this was his suggestion, not mine.) Bead curtains don't come off-the-shelf in 9-foot lengths, though, so I don't know. Could be fun with the right beads, but it would have to be hand-made. Or we might be able to do something clever with thick-enough (or dense-enough) fabric. Or maybe some of each.
The distance between the top of the wall and the ceiling is 22 inches. The walls are 5 inches deep. Anchoring from the ceiling might be difficult. We ought to be able to do something interesting with this space, though.
I like the suggestion of the "cave" motif, including bats and phosphorescent moss (well, reasonable facsimiles). I wonder what we can do with this.
I'm betting that if I post this, I'll come back from Simchat Torah to some amusing suggestions. As you might infer, "tasteful" can be trumped by "fun". :-)

Oooh, an interesting puzzle.
Or, Get 2 bead curtains and cut pieces of one to create extensions for the other.
Or a pressure-mounted shower rod, to be attached/hung at a lower level from which the bead curtain could be hung to the ground.
Re: Oooh, an interesting puzzle.
Ooh. Where?
The shower rod is an excellent suggestion. Thank you!

Tacking some light fabric up as a ceiling might also be good.

wooden wall-ceiling frame?
Once you have a frame, you can cover it with beads, fabric, or even macaroni sprayed with gold paint. Just be prepared to discover that the walls and/or ceiling aren't quite as straight as your own carpentry.
Personally, I'd think about a few psychedelic posters with a small blacklight directed at them. It'd amuse people who should be amused and horrify people who should be horrified.

Could be fun, yes. :-)

22-inch-high wooden palisade.
Upholstered bolsters, perhaps with matching fabric on one or more of the walls to deal with light reflections.
The top-edging from a fancy fabric pavilion. (I know what I'm thinking of, but I don't think I'm describing it clearly.)
Hang some of those fake bamboo screens from the ceiling - they're pretty light, even a drop ceiling should support them. (I have some in both white and brown, I think I've seen pale blue, also.)
Empty 2-liter soda bottles lined up along the top of the partition. (Do any sodas still come in those translucent green plastic bottles?)
The weight of de-labelled soda bottles filled with tinted water would be too much, unfortunately, though you might be able to fake it by swirling paint on the insides.
Furnace filters are pretty lightweight and come in some interesting patterns.

There are still a few flavors that come in those sickly green bottles -- Sprite and Mountain Dew, I know, and maybe others. Oh, and Fresca (something we actually sometimes buy, unlike the others).
