There's a meme going around (not for the first time) along the lines of "if you read this, post a comment about $SUBJECT here" (implied: so I know you're reading my journal). I usually don't do those, and you shouldn't draw conclusions about my reading habits from my silence. (I never do ones that say I "must" do something, though the current one doesn't make that demand.) If I wasn't planning to read you, I wouldn't have subscribed to your journal in the first place.

I agree. I pretty much only do memes about once every 5-6 months, when one strikes me as being utterly cool -- and these aren't :)

I agree. I friend people I want to read, not people who pass some faithfulness requirement regarding how often they read me.

I do post those occasionally - but not with any assumption that everyone who's reading it _will_ post in response. I certainly don't, when people I know post things like that in their journals.

On the other hand, some of the responses I _do_ get are pretty damn funny...

I don't see them as "prove that you read me" but more of a "I feel lonely/bored, give me something to read." It's a bid for external entertainment.

...oh, and sometimes "please stroke my ego" which may or may not be annoying, depending on the tone of the request or the existing relationship between reader and poster.

I do find the one that says "If your eyes are passing over this, please reply to it" rather annoying, even if it isn't demanding per se that I respond. If people want responses, they should have something interesting to say.

I actually recall seeing you in the con suite at...ummm...Conterpoint, I think, and noticing the star around your neck.

I think the star was what stuck out; I often remember [livejournal.com profile] ladyat's as well.

Why Blog?

I suppose that the people who blog because it serves as a method of gathering their thoughts will not care as much whether or not people reply.

Those people who blog because they really want attention from someone in the outside world will care very much!

Those people in between will be happy for the show of internet friendliness, but not be offended if people don't reply to their journals right away :)

That's my two cents,
