Starting tomorrow, I will not be able to access personal email at work. Many web sites are blocked (including all known to offer email); LJ access is unknown. You should assume delays in responding to, or even seeing, email, interesting web sites, national news... If you have my cell-phone number, you can use that to reach me if it's time-sensitive. If you think you should have my cell-phone number and you don't, send me email (which will, err, be delayed, so don't wait until you need it).

That is above and beyond not-cool. I guess Viz has changed quite a lot since they were bought.

Annoying! A few months ago, they blocked a million things here, but then a couple weeks later, I suddenly had access to every site again. IT never announced why they dropped the firewall, and I certainly wasn't about to ask. Must have interfered with something command wanted.

This is all coming from above. J and B fought it but lost in the end.

It is unfortunate for Viz -- by which I mean "our people", the team that works so well together -- that Google is opening a Pittsburgh office while our buyers are creating ill will. I fear that we're going to lose people to them and that the tipping point for the rest of us is low.

Another reason for a laptop

I'm in the same situation at work. All personal e-mail sites are blocked, although LJ access is allowed. (Their concern is incoming e-mail attachments.) Many many many sites are firewalled as well, I'd venture to say that about half the things I click on here on LJ end up returning the "Access Denied" screen.

I'm lucky, though. In addition to my desktop, I was issued a laptop for travel. The laptop has a modem, and I can dial in through my office phone. Thus one more reason for having a laptop.

At one point there was talk of giving some of us laptops as secondary machines (for travel, because sometimes you just need another CPU available, to support a different OS, etc), but it didn't happen.

That said, it might be a violation of their policy to connect a company laptop to a non-company network (like in a hotel) without specific permission and (unknown-to-me) precautions. Otherwise there's risk that you'll go off the network, get infected with something, and bring it back onto the company network.

That does bring the risk of seeing Naked Guy in the apartment building next door (and believe me, this is a risk to us. not to him), but it could be worth pursuing. (Fortunately, Naked Guy eventually got the curtains clue. Or maybe we gave it to him; I'm not sure.)
