unspace has posted a thoughtful and thought-provoking series of entries, re-telling a decades-long struggle with faith and struggles with God. He calls it the "Deb" series, because it's wrapped up in his history with one good friend, but it's more about him than her.

Date: 2006-03-27 06:20 am (UTC)I can be very self-centered, and attempting to correct that is a struggle, both in my personal life and in my writing.
In Deb's case, there's enough there for a good story, even if I can't do it quite right. In some other cases, not being able to pull the focus away from me would destroy what I want to say about them.
I shouldn't sit there and tell you Deb is one of the people I love. I should write so that you fall in love with her also. Then, as the story progresses, readers would be forced to face the same questions I had to face, not simply watch me face them.
