Quote of the day:
"Don't worry if you don't know what eschatology is; it's not the end of
the world." (From Dani.)
This map shows the dominant words used for soft drinks across the country. I don't know what's going on in Alaska, or in that swirl of yellow over Missouri.
Word of the day: insinuendo. (Applied to the phrase "sometimes it works the first time", referring to software development.)
Seen in a book on design patterns: "If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it might be a turkey wrapped in a duck adapter".
This one's been around for a few days, but in case there are folks who haven't seen it: a fun way to deal with folks who are stealing your wireless access (though tsk tsk for not locking it down if you care).
Trivaia Woman Strikes again
His theories about the isolated colonies was that they represented the departure point for people who had thence gone to the other area. So - pop moved east in a wave across the northern states, following the eastern migration. The "coke" line (where I grew up) moved west -- and got hit by the Mexican movement upwards/spanish colonisation.
AND: people tended to move directly south when they migrate, which is why there is a wave front down south. Possibly migration would explain your Alaskan jigsaw puzzle.
The colonies in Florida show a strong imput from emigrees, with a strong cluster around Miami.
I note that El Dorado County, where I live, has the Pop -4, coke- 9, soda -31, unknown - 2 results I expected -- 31 respondents for Soda, in a straight move out from NY state via St. Joe MI, that you see with a lot of Mormon families out here.
That would be, I think, your swirl over St. Joe -- it was the major kick-off point for people going west. The Northeast was the population center in the time of migration (1800-1930's, if I recal correctly), and folks from there moving west went through St. Joe instead of across the "low road," or through Texas, etc. The Pony express left from there. So did all the major wagon trains, and the train tracks that were heading west were started outward from St. Joe. A lot of folks got to St. Joe, decided they liked it or were too broke to proceed, so they may well have just stayed.
Aren't useless skills fun?
