I'm looking for things to do with tomatillos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomatillo) other than large quantities of made-for-later salsa, although I've gotten a couple of suggestions and am leaning toward a sauce verde for tilapia. I'm also noticing that I keep getting potatoes and full heads of romaine each week, and am having trouble staying inspired about both relative to the recurring quantity.
On Friday??? Dangit! It used to be the last Friday was when everybody started arriving! Actually, I'm curious about what the average Pennsic goer thought about the great Chirurgeonate snafu.
If I didn't come home today I'd have to stay until after Shabbat (functionally Sunday, as packing and driving home in the dark isn't fun). With most camps (including mine) striking Saturday and an increasing number Friday, that's both inconvenient and depressing.
I'll see if I can wax creative about food after Shabbat.
I sometimes dice potatoes with onions, pan-fry until golden, and add some cheese at the last minute (seasonings to taste -- if just for me and not Dani, cayenne). I guess it's kind of a cross between homefries and hashbrowns -- I definitely prefer crispier to mushier textures in that space.
That question reminds me of the time I went to go get the car so we could start load-out and discovered the Russians had had a coup and the Kremlin was under siege. BKa-Boom! The Real World Strikes!!!!
-There was an exciting new Livejournal meme that involved answering 20 boring questions and two interesting ones. The meme implied that anybody who didn't complete the whole thing and pass it along to friends was somehow inferior.
-There's a new video circulating on the internet that has somebody singing/dancing/acting to a popular song/movie. It's not that funny, but a dozen different people have linked to it and/or forwarded the link to you via email.
-$PoliticalLeader1 called $PoliticalLeader2 a big doo-doo head. $PoliticalLeader2 suggested that harsh reprisals would be forthcoming.
-$FamousSportsGuy (or maybe $FamousActor) said/did something that was completely inappropriate. Fans claim that it's being blown out of proportion while simultaneously being the only ones who even care about the issue.
This is not exactly something you missed, but I had a brain wave of sorts. There's another person on my LJ friends list who I thought you might like to meet, in a virtual sense. She is a Reform convert who spent some time in a Conservative rabbinical school (UJ, in California). Would you be interested in talking to her?
And there was the first gulf war, with MPs showing up to collect people who'd been called up (but weren't home to receive the message).
While not as newsworthy to most people, there was also the year my company was bought by IBM while I was at Pennsic. I heard while there from people who'd arrived later and read newspapers (thought my leg was being pulled at first), but my manager couldn't have known that when she left a rather frantic message on my answering machine asking me to please call before coming back to the office. :-)
Lord, yes, the first Sand War -- remember that my newly appointed sucessor as Corp. Chronicler was one of the folks who got picked up with a black helicopter? Poor Mariah had no notice that she was going to take over at all!
It annoyed my Queen and added to her already packed schedule, and as I was camping with her and am her apprentice, by extension it annoyed me. It had no impact on my day-to-day, however.
Heh. Reminds me of the year that goldsquare and I got back from Pennsic to discover that our much-despised boss had been revealed as a plagiarist who had started out our fairly miserable codebase with stolen code -- he had been fired and we had started a crash project to replace the entire system quickly, to avoid being sued. A true "WTF?" moment...
