According to the midrash,
When Paro made his decree to kill all male Jewish children
Moshe's father-to-be stopped having relations with his wife and
then divorced her. Because he was a leader among the people, others
followed. His daughter Miriam challenged him, saying "you are worse
than Paro; Paro condemned only the males, but you condemn males
and females". At this Amram remarried his wife and others followed.
(Exodus Rabbah 1:13)
(I've heard this one before, but usually not with the part about the community following his lead.)
