I would like to think that if I had the only solid lead to a nuclear threat in custody, I would be smart enough to never leave him unattended, and especially wouldn't let an unsupervised civilian have access to him. (Nor Jack Bauer; look at his track record.) I would also like to think that I am not as smart in these things as real counter-terrorism agents. Thus, suspension of disbelief utterly failed, again.

And yet I keep watching. I'm hooked and I don't know why.

...I'd believe it. I've seen dumber.

Heck, even I've done dumber. The only reason I didn't make the 11 o'clock news was because my right hand and arm pulled a "Dr. Strangelove." I will not admit in writing what happened, but it was the worst response I could have made, except for every other possible response.
