Several people commented on this to me yesterday, which makes me think it's unusual:

When I ran my first kitchen I was surprised to walk in to find Johan alphabetizing my ingredients along a counter. I had thought to group like items together; he said this would be better. And it was. So I did that, and it did make things run more smoothly. I also laughed when I heard exchanges like:

Where's the honey?
Under 'h'.
What the... ok, that make sense.

Hm. Interesting alternative. I tend to group things for one dish together (on the counter by the window: breadcrumbs, vinegar, wine, green herbs: will become Sauce Verde). Yeah, that does result sometimes in people scurrying across the room because some other dish needs vinegar too.

I try to pack duplicates when I need duplicates.
I also try not to have any one ingredient in more than one recipe, though.

Alpha does make sense, but I dont think things would get put back properly in my kitchen =/
