they really ought to update their database

Last fall I got a recall notice for my Golf, and dutifully mailed the "I no longer own this car" card back to VW (the day after I bought my Fit, in fact). That, however, does not seem to have had any effect on mailings from my local dealership. These letters are usually good for a snark or two; they are written by either an optimist or someone who is blissfully unaware of problems in his dealership. Today's mail brought a good one:

It does not seem possible that it has been almost four years since you purchased your Volkswagen Golf.

Believe me, I was well aware of the time and, in particular, the expiration date on the warranty.

We trust that during this time it has been a source of pride and pleasure for you.

I have taken pleasure in telling my friends all about it. You'd rather I didn't.

This is an invitation to visit our showroom and see the new Volkswagen's.

There's more to editing than looking for the squiggly red lines in MS Word. Try turning on the squiggly green ones.

You will be pleasantly surprised at the improvements that Volkswagen has made in the past several years.

It would be hard for me to be surprised by disappointment.

Ok, that should hold me for a while. :-)

We've been very happy with our VW (2006 Jetta TDI) so far. It's a pity you ended up with a rotten one.

Because the school computers have a very new (and rather frustratingly designed) version of Word, I can tell that the green lines have switched to blue. Perhaps because people thought "well, red is bad, so green must mean the word is good, right?" Alternatively, because of red-green color blindness.
