Reminds me of a similar setup on the Shuttle that Spider Robinson had pointed out to him in a photo by a friend with the note, "Near as I can tell, the shit is supposed to hit the fan!"

I suspect that it has to do with the interface on each. Certain transfers would seem to require a good seal and a suitable conveyance mechanism so as to prevent particles from escaping and floating around in the air.
