when do you work? (high-tech edition)

A recent conversation at work makes me curious about current work-hour trends in the high-tech sector. If you work in this sector (in any job), work full-time and outside your home, and work what your company considers to be "conventional hours" (e.g. I'm not looking for the night-shift folks here), would you please answer a few questions for me?

"Typically" in these questions means that; I'm not concerned about the occasional doctor's appointment or parent-teacher conference that makes you change your routine. If you have something more regular going on that complicates your answer, please comment. If you are Shabbat-observant, please answer for the summer and comment. (I call out that special case because I know it will apply to several folks here.)

"By what time" means if you tend to arrive between, say, 8:00 and 8:30, choose 8:30. "After what time" means if you tend to leave between, say, 5:00 and 5:30, choose 5:00. Think of this as "what's the range of hours when, if someone wanted to talk with me in person, I'd be around".

My answers are slightly off because I ride a commuter coach for an hour to and from work, which allows me to get work done without actually being "at work" for purposes of core hours.

My team is very imprecise about core hours.

WoW raids (~.8/week) will cause my departure time to move from 7 to 6, but does not affect my arrival time.

Nominally, I'm supposed to be out the door at 4, but it often happens that I just leave later than normal.

I actually answered for my husband (who's pretty unlikely to actually see this poll, let alone answer it).

He'd say he left the office around 5:30/6:00 on a regular basis; in reality it's more like 8/8:30/9, unless it's later :-> I push to get him out the door to be at work no later than 9 am (and more like 8 am on days either kid is at daycare, as they have to be there by 8 am if they're eating breakfast there).

Most people where I work get in around 9:30-10 and leave 5:30-6:30 with a 1-2hr break in the middle of the day, but it depends on targets and the day of the week. I try and beat everyone else in so I can get real work done before they arrive. (I also try to leave earlier, but as you might surmise that practically never works, silly me)

My answers are in reference to the job I was recently laid off from.

At the job I held the longest, which was with a large corporation, the nominal standard was specific times, but the *effective* policy was core hours. At the job previous to that (which was my favorite job ever aside from the occasional financial problems), the policy was core hours... and everyone knew that unless there was a meeting scheduled, we'd wander in between 10 and 11, and leave somewhere between dinnertime and 2 AM.

Yeah, sorry. The question is motivated by a discussion of fuzzy culture rather than strict rules, and visibility is part of the cultural background here.

Corporate HQ for my company works 8-5 and is not paid for lunch. They turn a generally benevolent eye on those of us who work in the other building who have always been 9-5 or 9-6. There are even a few people here who work 10:30-7. Flextime is worked out within the group but our staff includes one Tanglewood Chorus member who works very odd hours due to Symphony rehearsals and voice lessons.
