daf bit: Avodah Zarah 75
Today's daf talks about the kashrut of cooking utensils. The mishna
teaches: if an Israelite purchases utensils from a gentile he must kasher
them in the usual ways: those cleansed by immersion he immerses, those
cleansed by scalding he scalds, those cleansed by being made white-hot
in the fire are made white-hot in the fire. (This is in addition to
immersing them in a mikvah, which is always required.) In the g'mara
R. Nachman says that this applies to new utensils as well as those
previously used, but the sages say that new utensils need only be
immersed. (75b)
I guess, technically, if you buy utensils that were made by a Jew (and never owned by anyone else) they would start out kosher, but that case is not covered (and would probably be rare today).
