daf bit: Pesachim 21
Jul. 11th, 2013 08:49 amThe torah commands us not to eat leaven or have it in our possession
during Pesach. A mishna on today's daf says that once the deadline
before Pesach is reached one may not benefit from leaven. In the g'mara
Hezekiah asks how we know this -- not eating is obvious, but how do we
learn that we are forbidden to benefit in any way? R. Abbahu says that
a prohibition on eating implies a prohibition on benefit unless told
otherwise, citing the case of nebelah, an animal that dies by
itself rather than being ritually slaughtered -- the torah tells us in
that case that one may not eat it, but he may give it to the stranger
in his gates or sell it to a foreigner. Since, in that case, the torah
tells us that other benefits are permitted, it stands to reason that
if the torah doesn't tell us other benefits are permitted,
then they aren't. (21a mishna, 21b g'mara)
