daf bit: Pesachim 28
Any leaven you still have as Pesach approaches must be destroyed so it
will not be in your possession. (This generally means the small amount that
you kept back after selling the rest, e.g. so you could have bread at your
final pre-Pesach meal.) How is it destroyed? In the mishna R. Yehudah
says that the only approved method is by burning, but the sages say one may
also crumble it and throw it to the wind or cast it into the sea.
The g'mara discusses scoping: does he ((crumble and throw) or (crumble and cast
into the sea)), or does he ((crumble and throw) or cast into the sea)?
The rabbis refer to similar language for the disposal of idols -- since you have to crush an idol, you should also have to crumble leaven. But an objection is raised: an idol cast into the water (other than the Dead Sea, which is specifically called out here) will not be destroyed unless it is first crumbled, but leaven will dissolve on its own so maybe it doesn't require crumbling first. Another opinion is that crumbling is required for wheat grains but not for bread, just as an idol cast into water requires crushing but one cast into the Dead Sea does not.
I don't see a resolution to the question here. (21a mishna, 28a g'mara)
