daf bit: Pesachim 105
Oct. 3rd, 2013 08:46 amRabina asked R. Nachman b. Yitzchak: if someone did not recite kiddush
at the beginning of Shabbat as required, may he proceed to recite it at
any time during the day? R. Nachman answered that since one who did not
recite havdalah at the end of Shabbat may do later in the week, then so
too he can recite kiddush later. Then a question is raised: on Shabbat
we make kiddush over wine and also drink wine with all the festive meals
(Friday night and Saturday), so
if a man has only enough wine for one glass, what takes precedence?
The conclusion here is that the
Friday-night kiddush takes precedence because it sanctifies the entire
day, and a religious duty is more precious when performed at the proper
time. (105a-b)
