seeking excellent Pittsburgh optician

Dear Brain Trust,

When it comes to eyeglasses I have complicated, finicky needs. I had an excellent optician who consistently met those needs -- but note that "had"; the place is no longer in business and the optician have moved out of state. It's now time to get new glasses, so I'm looking for recommendations.

The optician I'm looking for will be very precise about measuring, bifocal placement, the optical properties of different frame shapes, and so forth. This optician will also work with me for as long as it takes; last time we spent over an hour putting together the order. I am looking for -- and expect to pay for -- a high-end professional.

Ideally this optician either is within several miles of Squirrel Hill or has generous evening or Sunday hours. (Saturday hours do not help.) But for the right optician, if I have to go to Wexford during the work day (shudder) I'll do that. I'd just rather not.

I have a prescription already; I don't need an exam or a refraction. I just need somebody to make my glasses to exacting standards.

Any recommendations?

I recently got a new pair of glasses from Lens Crafters (my prescription isn't at all complicated) and was impressed with their measurement system. They have an online video describing it (http://www.lenscrafters.com/lc-us/accufit?sid=EyeCareDD-Espot1-ACCUFIT-30TH-US-112413). I suspect that the floor staff isn't exceptionally well trained, unfortunately.

Yeaaahh, this seems like it would work if you wanted a copy of your existing glasses (and had all the numbers (and the existing glasses are relatively new because apparently the frame companies cycle through designs at a seriously alarming rate--I've never been able to get the same frames twice in a row, even from the same shop)), but not so well for new ones unless the prescription was really simple.

They sell pre-made reading glasses in drugstores though, so impersonal production must work for somebody.

Alas, I can't recommend anyone—my prescription isn't nearly as finicky as yours.

I have heard good things from a friend about Dr. Rudavsky, but I haven't been to see him. He is in Squirrel Hill, my friend thought he was very thorough.

We go to Eyes on Regent Square. My impression based on one visit is that they are fine for normal purposes. I am not confident that their optician who helped me choose frames and fit my glasses would be the optician you are searching for.

All the best. Finding a new professional to replace one you had a good relationship with is never fun.

Ah - he does not make glasses, upon a closer look at his page, he does recommend 20/20 Opticians next door to him. Sadly, I know nothing about them.
