synagogues: affiliation and participation

A friend posted (in a locked entry, so no link) an exchange he had with another member of his congregation about attracting people to synagogues. (They've been having a rough time of it.) At about the same time, my rabbi and I were discussing why people (don't) come to minyan, and cahwyguy published a digest of mail.liberal-judaism that included a pointer to this profile of an unaffiliated Jew. So all of this has been rolling around in my hind-brain for a few days.
