daf bit: Yoma 48
Dec. 26th, 2013 09:05 amA mishna on yesterday's daf explains that the kohein gadol (high priest)
takes two handfuls of incense (one in each hand) and places them in a ladle
(which will later be poured out on the altar). There is much discussion
in the g'mara about how he does this (with his fingertips? scooping as
much as possible?), with some questions unresolved. The g'mara on today's
daf asks if these are heaping scoops or levelled-off scoops, and the answer
is neither -- they should be in the middle, generous but not heaping.
The mishna also makes clear, by the way, that this measure is per the
priest's size; the goal is not a fixed amount as in some other offerings
but, rather, what this particular kohein gadol can hold in his hands.
