I think (and this is by no means original) that the break between the actions Pinchas takes and his reward is quite intentional on the part of the Rabbis. Traditionally, you'll have at *least* a few days between reading those sections.

Also, if you ever want to give a D'var Torah at my minyan, let me know. :-)
