daf bit: Menachot 55
Oct. 4th, 2018 10:21 pmWe learn from the torah that meal-offerings must be eaten unleavened. The mishna on today's daf teaches: all meal-offerings must be kneaded with lukewarm water and watched lest they become leavened. If one allows the remainder (what is left after the handful is removed) to become leavened, he transgresses a prohibition. The g'mara explains: had the torah only said "what you bring to the Lord shall not be leavened", we would know that the restriction is only on the handful. But the text says "meal-offering" so it means the whole of it cannot be leavened, not just the part that is offered on the altar. The rabbis then continue: it says "that you shall bring", which implies that if you bring it first and then add leaven right there at the altar, that might be ok? The question is left unresolved. (55a mishna, 57a g'mara)
I expected a connection in the g'mara to the rules for matzah on Pesach, but I don't see one. I wouldn't be surprised if the discussion of that -- wherever it is -- refers back to this one.
