I know that our sages teach: if you are approaching the town and you see smoke from a fire, you are not to say "please let it not be my house" because that's implicitly wishing for it to be somebody else's. Yet when we were waiting for the names I couldn't help saying "please let it not be (name)", even though one person's blood isn't any redder than anybody else's, and I felt guilty about that. Still, I was *so* glad when I heard back from the one friend the next morning, even as I was soon to be saddened by other names.

(I'm slowly catching up on all of this, not in any particular order.)
