From my perspective (obviously different from yours), it's a slow decline. Pennsic will probably continue on with between 9000 and 11000 prople for quite some time after P50. But, like you, I've concluded that we've slipped out of that "sweet spot" where the disparate goals of so many people managed to coincide (however unlikely that was) for so many years.
I'm still kind of excited about Pennsic every year, tempered though that may be by "OMG we never have enough time to set up the sho AND my camp"... Pennsic this year was a damn site better than what happened once I got back, that's for sure. There's a reason I haven't posted.
For "off the ground and dry" options, I'd look for a used vardo myself; that has the advantage of being re-sell-able once one gets to the point of *requiring* temperature and humidity control overnight (a point some of my friends HAVE gotten to). I'm not quite to that point myself, though I was very glad for a way to get my BED off the ground this year. (Even if only by a few inches, it made all the difference.)
