Thank God! Ended Shabbos and found out about the news. Blessed is the righteous Judge. May the Lord comfort us among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
Some people in my (reform) congregation carry cell phones on Shabbat. Occasionally one rings or chirps or something because the owner forgot to put it on vibrate or silence it. Today a whole *bunch* of phones went off in a short period of time, which was enough to prompt somebody to look rather than just silencing them. (No, not a government alert or anything like that -- people who'd heard the news and were calling/texting people they know.)
Once we heard the shooter had been caught we decided to disperse -- we were in a *synagogue*, after all -- but until then we kept everybody inside and locked the doors. Scary.
I had an inkling something had happened, because M, a friend (who just got up from sitting shiva for his mother) told me that he noticed a local minister came in and was comforting our Rabbi during kiddush (probably around 1pm). At that point, I was more worried about the results of game 3 of the world series. Another friend told me a bit later "Pittsburgh" and "9 shot". I thought of you... and was glad to see when I went online after Shabbat that you were OK. Joy live-streamed the havdalah rally in Union Square (we found out about it a bit too late to get down there)...
I am almost certain that I do. I would expect that the people who regularly come to a weekday morning minyan are going to be the ones who actually show up *on time* for a Shabbat service. They haven't released any names yet and I've heard no rumors -- went to a vigil tonight that had a few thousand people and didn't see any of my friends from there in that huge crowd (but also, dark). I've been unable to reach my closest friend in the weekday minyan.
Glad you're safe. I had to track down w/ system you were on, and actually saw the list before I got here, but I'm glad you're OK. You were the first person I thought of! And I saw it much earlier than most of the shabbos-non-using-electicity folks, due to being in Israel.
