very random thoughts

Ralph pointed me at LiveJournal, and it sounds like it could be fun, so here goes.

Here are some answers to one of those sets of very-random questions that floats around the net.

LIVING ARRANGEMENT:
Own house with my husband; also occupied by 3 cats (Erik the Rehead, Baldur the Fairly Slow, and Embla).

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OUIJA BOARDS?
Hey, if spirits or whatever could really talk to us, they ought to be able to manage better than 300 baud. I mean c'mon, *everyone* has 56k by now, or better. Fire up that ADSL connection, guys! My ancestors ought to know that the best way to reach me is email. :-)

WHAT'S ON YOUR MOUSE PAD?
Don't use one at home, though I might if I came across one that has a picture of a mouse nest. At work: some generic company-issued thingie; it's mostly hidden from view anyway (under the monitor shelf), so it doesn't matter much.

FAVORITE BOARD GAME.
Advanced Civilization? Train games like Eurorails? Merchant of Venus (which in a way is topologically equivalent to said train games)? Hard to pick just one.

FAVORITE SMELLS:
Cinnamon, lilac, mint, pine, wood smoke[*], crisp air on a cold day right after fresh snow.

[*] We're talking smells, so the fact that it's an allergen doesn't count.

WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD:
Tie: "I knew better and I made that mistake again anyway", or thinking that no one cares about what you do/say/think/feel.

BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD:
Tie: Knowing that I've made a real difference to someone, or that special connection with God that happens just often enough that you really keep trying. (Ok, I guess that sounds corny, but it's hard to express in words.)

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU THINK WHEN YOU WAKE IN THE MORNING?
Varies. Turn that blasted alarm off. Hi, Erik (one of the cats). The problem at work I was thinking about last night. What was that noise and where is Baldur (another cat, the likely source)? Many others...

ROLLER COASTER - SCARY OR EXCITING?
Indifferent.

FAVORITE FOODS:
Spicy Indian/Thai/Vietnamese/Chinese food. Sushi. Salmon in pretty much any form. Ginger in large quantities. Garlic by the bulb. Sephardic charoset. Jelly beans (especially cinnamon and root beer). Chocolate-covered cherries. Caffeine (yes, in the quantities in which I consume it, it counts as food).

DO YOU LIKE TO DRIVE?
Hate it. Driving is a necessary evil to get places I want to be. It beats Pittsburgh's implementation of public transit, though.

DO YOU SLEEP WITH A STUFFED ANIMAL?
No, I sleep with live animals (at least in the winter when they're attracted to the electric blanket), plus a husband.

STORMS - COOL OR SCARY?
Definitely cool, especially with good light shows.

WHAT TYPE WAS YOUR FIRST CAR AND WHAT WAS ITS NAME?
A used Toyota Corolla. I don't name my cars.

FAVORITE ALCOHOLIC DRINK.
Any fruit glop that doesn't involve coconut.

IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY JOB YOU WANTED, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Tough call. On some level I want to be the most kick-ass technical writer in the world. On another level, it would be cool to be able to spend my days composing nifty music that someone would actually perform, or incorporate into a soundtrack, or something. Or, for something completely different, I'll admit that I have the occasional fantasies about rabbinical or cantorial school, but I promised my husband I wouldn't pursue that.

DO YOU EAT THE STEMS OF BROCCOLI?
If they're there.

IS THE GLASS HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL?
Twice as big as it needed to be for the task at hand.

FAVORITE MOVIE(S)?:
Don't see many movies, but tastes are highly varied. I like stories that can touch me and movies that make me laugh, but I don't like overly-mushy stuff, slapstick, or action flicks that punted on plot.

ARE YOU A LEFTY, RIGHTY, OR AMBIDEXTROUS?
Kind of ambidextrous.

DO YOU TYPE WITH YOUR FINGERS ON THE RIGHT KEYS?
Mostly, except for the part about the funny punctuation characters and the pinky that lives over the control key...

WHAT'S UNDER YOUR BED?
Dust bunnies.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN TEN YEARS?
In Pittsburgh, still married with cats but no kids, still working somewhere in the software industry, at least as involved in my congregation as I am now (maybe helping out newcomers more).

Welcome

Glad to see you here!

My favorite thing about LJ is that I'm getting to know my friends a lot better.

And your "best feeling in the world" answers don't sound even slightly corny to me. Pretty close to my own answers. Maybe we're both corny then. ;-)
