Carnivore and other abominations

It looks like things like this are going to become even more important, as we're told that we "need" to give up liberty for security. (We all know the standard adage about liberty and security...) I of course knew that things like FreeNet were out there, but had not been sufficiently motivated to investigate before now. I wonder how much skill and arcane knowledge is required to get set up with something like this.
