I felt kind of crappy when I woke up this morning. (Can't tell, but it's possible I'm catching a cold.) Things got better after I got moving (and drank large quantities of water and a quart of OJ). But I also haven't been sleeping well, because Dani's snoring has gotten worse and he keeps waking me up (or delaying my getting to sleep in the first place). Mid-afternoon, I was feeling pretty cruddy and was contemplating just going home.

But we have a magic room at MAYA, so I tried that first. It's a small room with a "Z" on the door. It contains a bed, comfy pillows, an alarm clock, and a "do not disturb until <time>" sign to hang on the door. It's an interior room, so almost no daylight gets in.

Half an hour in the Z room made an enormous difference!

I know that's what it's there for (and it's HR-endorsed, not a clandestine engineering-group thing), but I still felt kind of sheepish using it -- I scouted the hallway when entering and leaving, etc. Maybe what I'm waiting for is evidence that other people actually use it too.

Heh. You know what you've got there? A "zero room" - a "neutral environment cut off from the rest of the universe", like the one the Doctor used when recovering from his regeneration from the Fourth to Fifth Doctors ("Castrovalva"). I've no doubt it works.

Wow... I'm bringing that idea to NeuStar. My boss has been begging for a bed for ages so that we can get refreshed when we pull all-nighters.

Ooh. I desire it.

The closest we have is Mark's cot.

At Dragon there were a couple of couches in the halls of the Research department. I napped on them quite a few times, as did a couple of other people in my group (one of whom is also a filker). No-one else ever did, though I know for a fact that at least one person took a regular afternoon nap in his office with the door closed. (I had a cubicle, and I figured I might as well be blatant about it if it helped me get my work done.)

When L&H bought Dragon, it was no longer comfortable to sleep on the couch. Too many people around who Didn't Get It.

I think I'd pretty much be fired if I was caught sleeping at work. Though there have been a few times when I've pretty much fallen asleep staring at the computer screen trying to think up something brilliant to say about Intrusion Detection Systems. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........
