TrustFlow (networking meme)

Interesting. I tried out "TrustFlow", which assesses your "friends" list and their lists and so on and nominates people who are popular among your friends but not directly your friends. Their model is that friend = trusted party (not a safe bet with LJ, but what can you do?), and each person distributes "trust points" evenly among his friends, and after you run this a few levels out you start to get a picture. (Algorithm description.) (I found out about this from [livejournal.com profile] dragontdc.)

I recognize many of the names on my list, which isn't surprising. What is surprising is that I don't recognize the top scorer and we have only one friend in common. I'm curious about that.

Here are the results (with their canned text): Read more... )

"personal DNA"

The set of questions for this one was interesting. I'd like to know more about how they score it and, particularly, how fine the gradations are and how many labels they use in the results.

My Personal Dna Report

Best question in terms of pegging my reaction: a question about noticing what other people wear, with one end of the scale being "people wear things?".

(Summary: still INTJ. :-) )

Johari

This looks like an interesting exercise that everyone seems to be doing (with predictable site-availability results sometimes). If you like, go to this site, choose half a dozen traits you think I have, and then see how that compares to everyone else's assessments. http://kevan.org/johari?name=cellio

meme: getting to know you

I've seen this a bunch of times in the last few days:

The problem with LJ: We all think we are so close, but really we know nothing about each other. So if you like, ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.

Then, if you like, post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

LJ: memes

There's a meme going around (not for the first time) along the lines of "if you read this, post a comment about $SUBJECT here" (implied: so I know you're reading my journal). I usually don't do those, and you shouldn't draw conclusions about my reading habits from my silence. (I never do ones that say I "must" do something, though the current one doesn't make that demand.) If I wasn't planning to read you, I wouldn't have subscribed to your journal in the first place.

in lieu of content...

I got this from [livejournal.com profile] browngirl and others.

If you are so inclined, take a look at my icons and comment with the following:
1. One that makes you automatically think of me.
2. One that you think I should use more often.
3. One that you don't get/needs more explanation/you have no idea why the hell I have it.
Comment using an icon of yours that you LOVE, and tell me why you picked THAT one too.

mind map

My, what a pretty visualization. I wonder what all the symbol encodings mean. Size seems to be tied to number of connections and color to clusters (people who are mostly friends with each other). I don't know what the brackets and position mean.

Edit: Hey, I just noticed that some of my mutual friends aren't here. I wonder what's up with that, given that some who are very loosely connected (clique size 1) do show up.

random-questions meme

There's a survey-type meme going around that asks you who on your friends list you actually know and generates questions. That's apparently been slash-dotted; this is a different one. (Maybe newer? Maybe a response? I don't know.) I got it from [livejournal.com profile] tangerinpenguin, I think.

intuition meme

Both variables being measured here surprised me, but in different directions. (In one case I suspect a flawed test.) I'm mildly curious about what they consider the "right" answers to be, but not curious enough to perform the exhaustive search.

lemming: things I enjoy

At the request of [livejournal.com profile] tangerinpenguin:

List 5 things you enjoy, even when no one around you wants to go out and play. What lowers your stress/blood pressure/anxiety level? Post it to your journal and then tag 5 friends and ask them to post it to theirs.

  • Rewatching "comfort" TV shows -- M*A*S*H, Twilight Zone, Blake's 7, others. The key is the rewatching, it seems.
  • Cooking something adventurous. "Adventure" is more likely to be about flavors and ingredients than about technique; diving into complicated pastry, for instance, is not my idea of relaxation.
  • Snuggling with the cats. Ok, snuggling with the human is nice too. :-)
  • Writing -- here, fiction from the D&D game, or other stuff, so long as it doesn't involve deadlines and customer requirements.
  • Thinking/talking through off-the-wall halacha -- the less practical, the better.
I don't generally "tag" people for stuff like this; if you want to go ahead and I'll enjoy reading the results.

cut out the middleman

[livejournal.com profile] kayre had a good idea (which she in turn got from [livejournal.com profile] city_of_dis). My LJ friends come from a number of different and sometimes-intersecting circles. There are my local (and formerly-local) friends, the SCA folks, the filkers, the Jewish community, and several others. Many of you don't know each other but perhaps you should.

So this is your chance. If you feel inclined, say something about yourself here -- not addressed to me, but to the other readers of my journal who might turn out to be friends you didn't know you have.

banned books

Seen in many journals, most recently [livejournal.com profile] dragontdc. This is a list of the most-often banned books (time period unknown to me). The convention is to use formatting to indicate which you've read all or part of and which others you want to read, but I'm going to sort the list instead.

While I'm a little surprised at the number of items on that last list, I must admit that I have basically no curiosity about them.

10 things

There's a meme going around where you list ten things you've done that most people haven't. I think it started out as "...that no one else reading this has done", but I haven't led a novel-enough life for the number of readers I have. :-)

my ten things )

And the flip side: ten things I've never done that many people I know probably have:

rants and raves

Lots of people are doing the "invite a rant" thing, but I like [livejournal.com profile] gnomi's variation on it:

-- Want me to rant about something? Pick a topic, and I'll see what I can do about ranting about it.
-- Alternately, not so much in the mood for a rant? Want me to rave about something? Pick a topic, and I'll try to rave about it.

Please tell me which you want -- a rant or a rave. If you do not specify which one you want, I'll do whichever tickles my fancy (and I do warn you that leaving me to my own devices can be a scary, scary thing).

This should be an entertaining way to queue up topics for future posts. :-) (None of which will occur before teh end of Shabbat, just in case there was any doubt.)

icons

[livejournal.com profile] matsujo9 made me this nifty icon. Thus I continue the trend: comment if you would like me to make you an icon based on one of your LJ interests. The choice of interest is entirely up to me.

(There will be a delay, and I should mention that I don't have l33t Photoshop skillz...)
